NBPTS Proposition 5: Teachers are members of learning communities
Proposition 5
- NBCTs collaborate with others to improve student learning
- They are leaders and actively know how to seek and build partnerships with community groups and businesses
- They work with other professionals on instructional policy, curriculum development and staff development
- They can evaluate school progress and the allocation of resources in order to meet state and local education objectives
- They know how to work collaboratively with parents to engage them productively in the work of the school.
Artifact 1: Case Study Part 1-2 SETT Model 10/16/2011 Edu 721
Artifact 2: Exhibit Plan Assignment 2 11/2011 Creating Successful Exhibits
Artifact 3: Action Research Paper 5/1/2012 Edu 690
These artifacts align with NBPTS Proposition 5: Teachers are members of learning communities.
Rationale:
To document my involvement in the professional learning community, I have included a case study SETT model, an Action Research Paper, and a mock-up exhibit plan because they align with NBPTS proposition 5. These artifacts show that team work is an important part of my background as an educator. They highlight my abilities to improve my teaching techniques through research and collaborations with colleagues, community partners, and peers. The case study SETT model shows that I am aware of time constraints associated with visiting school groups and the need for team work and planned agendas. This allows for visiting groups to receive the best instruction. The exhibit plan highlights my understanding that at the aquarium, education requires many different departments working together to provide a hands-on experience for students. It shows that education is a part of the early planning stages of new exhibits. The Action Research Paper shows my ability to assess my own teaching techniques and to utilize that data to improve my teaching abilities. All of these artifacts show my ability to be flexible and that I am willing to learn new ways to meet the educational goals of the facility where I work.

Reflection
These assignments taught me that there is much to consider when looking to improve education at the aquarium where I work. It taught me, to put forth the research to ensure that my idea is worth the effort and that it hasn't already been done. If it has been done, it is important for me to speak with the person involved to make sure that when I implement something similar, it doesn't upset professional relationships with that person. These assignments also taught me that education must be at the forefront of everything I do. In the end it all ties together with interpretation and understanding to improve conservation and research of the highlighted species on display.
