Artifact: Writing Portrait 4/3/2011 Edu 743
This artifact meets NBPTS proposition 3: Teachers are responsible for managing and monitoring student learning.
Rationale:
I have included a writing portrait on scientific journals and scientific reporting because it aligns with NBPTS proposition 3. It shows my ability to deliver effective instruction to a differentiated group of students. The writing portrait explains in detail how I engage students in scientific journaling so that it will help them effectively organize what they are learning during their classes. In turn the journals are used to assess students' understanding and growth while learning new materials. This activity also gives the students a starting point for writing a scientific report on the topics they learned in classes at the aquarium.

Reflection:
This assignment taught me that students' self-esteem is extremely important to their success in well written journals. I learned that students need guidance in their writing to ensure they produce the best possible journal entries. I learned that in order to ensure all students show what they have learned, I had to provide alternative outlets to traditional journal entries. These alternative outlets included comic strips, drawings, and audio and video recorded entries. However, these alternatives had to be used in conjunction with traditional written entries to ensure students' writing skills would still improve over time.
