Mission Statement
To share my knowledge of the sciences with my students by providing them with the necessary resources and information to increase their understanding of the complexities of the variety of natural environments and the plants and animals that inhabit those environments. To continue to inspire stewards of our environment through in-depth meaningful education programs. To create in-depth experiential learning curriculum which incorporates STEM Education for students with pre and post assessment.
Philosophy
I believe throughout life every person is at some point both an educator and a learner. Teaching is the ability to share one's knowledge about a specific topic with another individual who is seeking more knowledge on that topic. As a lifelong learner and educator, I have had the unique ability to learn much about the marine ecosystem through hands-on experiences. I believe that books cannot be substituted for real experiences in identifying species and habitats. Books can accompany these experiences, but only face-time can truly evoke a feeling of awe for a student learning about play behaviors in bottle-nose dolphins or holding a sea star in their hands, feeling the animal move ever so slightly. These experiences create life long memories and promote life long learning.
My first experience happened with a humpback whale while I was standing on a sandbar fishing with my dad. As we were standing, the water in front of us began to boil and suddenly I was starring down the throat of an adult female humpback whale while she was feeding. This experience combined with many others like it has driven my constant quest for knowledge about marine animals and their environments. In my classroom I strive to create these types of experiences for my students to encourage their desire to seek further knowledge and understanding about the immensities of information available for them to further their education.
